Connecting flights at GYD

GYD is increasingly used as a transit hub between Europe, Türkiye, Russia and the Gulf, and on to Central Asia, Iran and Pakistan. AZAL operates a wave structure with multiple banks per day, allowing 60–90 minute connections on most international itineraries. International-to-international transit passengers do not need an Azerbaijan visa as long as they remain airside; passengers requiring overnight transit or wishing to leave the airport must hold a valid Azerbaijan e-Visa or visa-free entitlement.

Flight delays and cancellations

For EU-bound flights subject to EC 261 regulations, passengers may be entitled to compensation of €250–600 for cancellations and delays of 3+ hours, depending on route distance. AZAL and other carriers operating to/from EU destinations are bound by these rules. For weather-related delays (notably the Khazri wind events in winter and spring), compensation does not normally apply but care obligations (food, accommodation) typically do.
